Dress styles

Non-verbal communication is the communication that is transmitted outside the use of words. And, in fact, our communication begins from the moment we are perceived by others, long before we even begin to speak. So, whether your appearance is important to you or not; as a good gentleman, you should care about what you communicate to others. And that's what style is all about: communication. The phrase "fashion goes out of style, style never" is articulated with the full intention that we recognize the difference between fashion and style; and it is on the difference between these terms that we will first reflect.

In reality, fashion has little or nothing to do with functionality; fashion refers to what is popular, what everyone is wearing, doing or saying. In terms of clothing, dressing fashionably refers to dressing according to trends and what is considered popular. In this sense, fashion can be understood as an external force, established by people who have great social influence and who decided what is good to wear. We can also think of fashion as something transient: a certain way of dressing that at one moment is well regarded; but is soon replaced by the next trend and thus becomes part of history.

Without meaning to offend, I would not recommend anyone to follow fashion trends for two reasons: 1 because they are volatile and that, in a way, goes against the philosophy of establishing solid principles to guide our behavior; and 2 because they are largely external influences in which your identity has little or no influence on them. I don't know if I'm being clear; but what I'm trying to say is that fashion trends are generally imposed by other people and you can only limit yourself to following them as much as possible. And that is definitely not the path I am inviting you to consider.

What is Style?

On the other hand, if you search the internet for "men's clothing styles" or "men's clothing styles" you will notice that they are no longer pictures of models on the catwalk; they are pictures of men on the streets, going about their daily activities with appropriate clothing for the activity. And, although the styles are very diverse, you can see that it's all about expressing your identity in a practical way. Style is about making you look your best, according to your tastes and your personality.

Types of men's dress styles: How many are there, what are the main ones, which ones are in fashion?

As we commented in the previous section, styles are an expression of our identity, they are unique and personal. From that perspective, every man has his own style of dress, his own "personal stamp". So, the question, how many men's dress styles are there? becomes extremely difficult to answer. However, many styles have certain characteristics that are similar such as wearing garments of the same color, of the same design or with a certain degree of formality; and, therefore, they can be classified within the same group or the same type of clothing style.

Even so, although we can group or classify men's clothing styles, there are still a considerable number of them. Just to mention a few clothing styles, we have: Streetwear, Rocker, Skate, the Hip Hop or Cholo style, the Gothic, Punk, Hipster, Hippie, Sport or Sporty, Casual, Bohemian, Biker or Motorcyclist, Cowboy or Cowboy, Military, Formal, Classic, and so on. Tell us in the comments or in our social networks what is your style of dress? what is your personal touch?

Main styles of dress or fashion styles for men

So, to go deeper in our study of dress styles, let's briefly review the main styles or "fashionable" styles; corresponding to men's clothing. All styles have their pros and cons and all will help you look better and be more attractive.

Streetwear/Street/Urban

As its name suggests, streetwear is a style designed for city life and all the activities and hustle and bustle that goes with it. In that sense, this style pursues to mix comfort, practicality and aesthetics.

The main pieces for this style of dress are: denim pants, sneakers, cotton t-shirts and a good leather jacket. Jeans are essential for many styles.

Hipster Style

According to several sources, the hipster style was born between the 40s and 50s. It is a culture that is also expressed in the way it dresses. The hipster clothing style is impregnated with nostalgia for the past, history and vintage. Among its fundamentals are: the recycling of items, education and care for the environment.

The hipster menswear style, as well as its ideology, is clearly defined. The most representative elements of this element are: the use of glasses (even if you don't need prescription), plaid flannel shirts, hat and scarf (regardless of the weather), jeans and military or dress boots.

Finally, those who have the virtue of being able to develop abundant hair have what is perhaps the most representative element of the hipster style for men: a generous and well-groomed beard. This style of dress is gaining momentum and is becoming a benchmark for the casual dress code. Although the hipster style can be adapted to acquire a certain level of formality, it is not the most appropriate for events that require a formal dress code.

Sport Style

For the man who prefers a sporty style, comfort is the priority. The sport style is designed to be able to comfortably perform all your physical activities while projecting your style. An important detail that you should not overlook is that the sport style is NOT the clothes you wear to work out or go to the gym. This style manages to mix comfort with sportswear with a casual touch that allows you to dress appropriately to perform your tasks during the day.

According to several sources, the sport style was born in England as a man's attire designed to attend sporting events with a comfortable outfit, but without being sloppy. The key pieces of the sport style for men are: sport tennis shoes (mainly white), sport sweatshirts, oversized t-shirts, bomber jackets and, as icing on the cake, you can add a sport cap.

An interesting detail: in the sporty style of dress, the use of brand-name items is a factor with a lot of weight in the attire. Probably because it was born as an attire that was used to attend sporting events in which a brand of the team you are going to support is usually visible. In any case, this is a point of contrast with other types of men's dress styles.

The sport style is very casual and, therefore, is only recommended to be used in casual or casual codes at most. This means, avoid this style for any event that requires a minimum of formality and seriousness.

Biker Style

Another style of dress for men is the biker style, which also has behind it a set of principles that lead a life of freedom, rebellion and a hint of anarchy. The biker style, as the name suggests, is a style used mainly by motorcyclists. Although the simple fact of riding a motorcycle does not make you a biker, nothing prevents you from being able to use this particular style.

In short, an essential element within the biker style is the leather jacket, mainly in black; this is probably the most characteristic element of the style. Along with the jacket, plaid shirts or plain-colored T-shirts and a good pair of dark aviator glasses complete the outfit of the upper part of the biker.

For the lower portion, black denim or leather pants are essential along with a good pair of boots or even sneakers.

The biker style is defined by the functionality to go out and ride and the rebelliousness to lead a free life without boundaries.

Men's Casual Style

Men's casual clothing style is a style that combines informality with elegance and diversity. This type of style is used by the vast majority of men, although not all of them are aware that they wear casual style. Basically, the casual style is the one that most men wear when we do not have a special event that requires a particular code. For special events such as Christmas and New Year's celebrations, it is necessary to choose the right outfit.

The guidelines for this style are simple: comfort with a lot of personality and a touch of elegance, so in terms of key garments, the casual style is not clearly defined and is rather a very diverse and diffuse style. As you will see in the following images, casual style includes all kinds of basic garments: t-shirts, shirts, jeans, chinos, almost all kinds of footwear, various jackets and sweatshirts, etc.

In contrast, the casual style of dress, rather than focusing on specific garments, focuses on rules, tips or advice on what to wear for a given occasion. In addition, the casual style of dress can also "borrow" attire from other styles, but is not limited to them. The type of casual style is very diverse and is composed of basic garments that best suit your tastes and needs.
